Champions of B.C.! Nelson soccer teams win 2 gold at provincials

A boys side also earned a silver in Kamloops

Two youth teams are provincial champions following a historic day of success for Nelson soccer.

The Nelson Selects under-15 and U17 girls squads each captured gold at the Les Sinnott Memorial B-Cup tournament in Kamloops on Sunday.

The U15 boys also earned a silver at the event, which featured six Nelson teams.

Brett Adams, Nelson Soccer Association's technical director, said in a statement it was an unprecedented day for the organization.

"NSA is blown away with what just happened at provincials. For a small town to come back with three medals and two of them being gold is incredible. It shows how good our girls program is and how much dedication our female role model coaches put in on a weekly basis.

"These girls can inspire the next generation of players. We couldn’t be prouder of our players, coaches, board members and staff. This a platform that we can build on.”

Nelson's U15 team won gold by edging the KYSA Blaze 3-2 in the final after penalties, while the U17 team finished first after shutting out the Gorge Purves 2-0. The U17 team was also honoured with a fair play award for its good conduct on the pitch.

The U15 boys settled for silver following a 2-0 loss to KYSA.

"Nelson soccer association is blessed to have such amazing and talented coaches who spend hundreds of volunteer hours to train these kids," said U15 boys manager Catherine McRae.

"A huge shout out to Brett Adams for his dedication, knowledge and heart for the game as well as the rep director Amanda DeJong Peschke for her support. The consistency and passion pushed for Nelson’s success in Kamloops this year! The families and players thank you for absolute everything you do!

Other Nelson results included the U14 and U16 boys each finishing sixth, and the U18 boys coming in fourth.
